The Province of Ontario adopted the Green Energy and Green Economy Act (GEA) in May 2009. The GEA was designed to encourage the development of renewable energy projects in Ontario and promote a more sustainable way of doing business throughout the province.
An integral part of the GEA was the direction given to the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) to create a Feed-In Tariff (FIT) Program. The FIT program supports renewable energy projects by offering contracts that guarantee premium rates for electricity from clean generation sources for 20 years.
In enacting this legislation and introducing the FIT Program, Ontario has made a clear commitment to the environment and positioned itself as a leader in North America by establishing the continent’s most ambitious renewable energy procurement strategy.
Through this program, the OPA issues contracts to purchase solar electricity from rooftop installations (>10kW to 250kW) at $0.713 / kWh. This price allows Helios to develop and own solar PV systems on roofs around Ontario.
